At some disputed barricade by Anne Perry

Battle of Passendale, Belgium, 1917.
The Cambrigeshire regiment, mostly composed by men from Cambridgeshire, who have known each other since they were children, having lived in the same villages, has been fighting in this part of the continent since 1914.
Some died, some were wounded, but  the solidarity has remained in the trenches.
Then, after the death ot their major, another one arrives, who doesn't know how to give orders, or what orders to give in this chaos, and so being the cause of the death and wounds of their friends and comrades, without hearing the advices of the more experienced men.
So, twelve of them decide to make a fake court martial to frighten him. Unfortunately, the major is killed during the comedy.
Who killed him, and why?

The description of the war is brilliant, we are in the mud and the rain with the soldiers.
The characters are human.
Over the story, there is another intrigue, in London, between pacifist and war makers.

Apart from a very strange and quick crossing of France, from Belgium to Switzerland, on foot, during a few days, and the crossing of French and German lines, that seem a bit like a fairy tale, all the other descriptions of the battles and the men's thoughts in them are wonderful.

A book to read, if you are interested in this period.
